it could be just as likely that the whole thing is a fabrication.

It's not a complete fabrication. They just exaggerate the numbers by doing three things:
1- Label non-nude photographs of models as "pornography".
2- Label young looking adults, and all asians, as "kiddies".
3- Then multiply the count by 1000 for no reason.

I personally like the exaggeration of the numbers. It makes childlovers look more numerous, common, and normal, rather than some super rare freaks of nature as most people believe we are.
