On the Olympic gymnasts and their ages

I was talking to my wife the other day while we watched the Olympics. For a change, we agreed on something. We both think that the age criteria for the female gymnasts is ridiculous. It is a blatant double standard that male divers freely compete at 14, but the female gymnasts need to be 16.

What I did not express to my wife is what I feel is the REAL reason for the age restriction. No matter what the IOC or the International Gymnastics Federation actually SAY, imho, the REAL reason is this: Men lust over the female gymnasts whether they are 12, or 18. Everyone involved in gymnastics knows this, but few would ever dare speak of it. The 16-year-old age limit is convenient, because that is the age of girl for which most men in the West feel it is OK to begin cautiously acknowledging sexual attraction.
