What's more the previous Liberal government in 2005 passed a law prohibiting "exploitative" sexual activity with adolescents under 18. Now don't get me wrong no one wants to see Adolescents being exploited and I certainly do not condone any such conduct but...the law is defined so loosely that a judge may rule your relationship "exploitative" by taking such loosely defined factors as the "nature" of the relationship and by taking into account the "age difference" between the 2 parties. So even though it's "legal" to date 16 and 17 year old girls you still run the risk of a "Sexual Exploitation" charge being laid against you.
Supposedly Canada also has some of the strictest laws regarding "child pornography" too.
In all honesty even when Canada had an AOC of 14 cultural attitudes here towards Adult/Adolescent Relationships were just as negative as in the US. In the high school I went to a 17 year old boy who wanted to date a 14 year old girl would have been regarded as a "pervert" or a "looser" and a 19 year old want have been regarded as a total Pedo Scum...I should know...I fell for a 14 year old girl when I was 19 (we never dated because she knew her mother would never approve) and when some people found out I asked her out "Pedo Scum" was the taunt I earned from some people. Most Canadians supported raising the AOC. Many Canadians even mistakenly believed that the AOC was/is 18 due to the influence of American TV and because the AOC IS 18 for relationships between Minors and Adults in "Positions of Authority" and these types of relationships tend to receive the most publicity.
