First, an article at the Wall Street Journal ⚠️ ↗ about Preschool, and how it seldom has any long-term advantages (and only in rare and specific circumstances), and frequently has long-term ill effects. This is in relation to Barack Obama's drive for Universal Preschool.

Second, an article about an 8yo guitar player running afoul of anti-child labor laws ⚠️ ↗. This boy is a blues player, so I suppose the government of Wisconsin has done him a favor by giving him material for his act, but that doesn't reduce the injustice involved. Note that the story is clear, at least, about the motives of those who reported him to the authorities. It's not that anyone thinks he's liable to be hurt, it's that they don't want to have to compete with him. He's drawing crowds - they are not.

But don't think for a second that these laws and proposed laws are subject to unintended consequences. Universal Preschool is not supposed to educate or enable kids. Its purpose is rather to prevent children from learning too much or becoming attached to their families and communities, so that they will be more willing to serve the State. And child labor laws were always about reducing competition for adults (who can vote).
