Like all times in history, what appears to be grim to a later generation is relative to the norm of the times. Personally, I find the present times less civilised than many aspects of Victorian life. Many services are worse than in Victorian times. Have you experienced the British National health service, Rail service, or postal service recently ? As for sanitation, it was the Victorian engineers (Bazalgette & Son) who constructed the sewers and drains of London, on which that once-great city still relies. Unfortunately, Britain is now an unpleasant squalid country under the thumb of a dangerous control-freak totalitarian government. At least in Voctorian times, there was an ethos of free education, Consider the legacy of the great British museums and educational establishments. Now we have the vacuous outpourings of television and the gutter press. Sorry, I am ranting.................send for the state police.
