i think you just need to have very modest ambitions when it comes to friendship with kids. if they love you back, thats great, but they can also be capricious and even cruel with their affections, and that is their right.

its best to just focus on giving a child the things she needs to be healthy and happy, and gaining rewards from that. its not right to look to kids for what they can give you in return.
