This really was a tragic story, as all such stories are.

And I think you make a very good point about children and choice. I see what Locke was saying too. But the more children are acknowledged as autonomous individuals (not just with this but in broader terms too), the more they're empowered so they can see they can (or could if things were different) make choices that are right for them. If only Erin could have had that kind of respect from the people who should have been helping her.
