Some of the comments of the subthread emphasise that many times children would choose their same family because it's what they know and view as normal.

However, always at one point or another, a child wishes to go to another family. I don't think any child never had a "greener grass" moment at least once. They all sometime envied some other child and their family for any given reason. If it was possible to do it, I would think many children would take the option, even if it was only as a vacation of sorts.

Further, if children were allowed to choose where to live, the very possibility as well the amount of movement from kids who do move, would make it more known to every child that what they have to put up with is or is not normal and would make them *know* more than just their family.
