Well, I've lived in jurisdictions where I'd have to flee, as well as jurisdictions where I could legally kill the attacker on the spot.
I tend, however, to travel unarmed myself, which isn't too bad against any kind of knife, not even a machete if you know the battleground better than your adversary, but it is a non-starter against a firearm...
