True but I would argue that that is only part of it, why would the darker aspects of the collective consciousness wish to perpetuate isolation and suffering?
Because that aspect wishes to halt all advancement in order to avoid the pain associated with personal growth, simply put. It is intent on carving out a place in the universe without regard for the rest of creation, with room to spare for all it's aberrations.
