Mom and Dad seem to me like terms of endearment.

They are intimate names that you only get to use on people who are very close to you. I can't imagine *not* using these terms. I know that one day my mom and dad will pass, and I'll miss them deeply. I'm glad to still have them around and be able to use those terms I can't use on anyone else.
