I'm not a fan of McCain (nor any of the other candidates), but this is unfair. There are many reasons to not do well academically, and many bear little relation to intelligence. The fact that John McCain got into West Point in the first place is quite an academic accomplishment.

Many smart people have dropped out of college, or were too smart for their professors, or simply went against the grain. All of these look bad on paper, but these same people often go on to successful and productive lives - and are frequently far more capable and intelligent than the class valedictorians.
