I'm guessing she means someone guilty of child-rape. Thus, why 'pedofiles' would be sent to a certain city in Australia (which presumably contains a prison.) 'Covering up for pedofiles' is most likely referring to how the media is unable to say that someone was charged with CSA. If you were guilty of child-rape ('a pedofile'), she wouldn't be talking to you -- because you'd be in prison. She probably ignored your defense of pedophiles because she didn't understand it at all.

An alternative explanation is that she is able to be open to homosexuals/transgendered people because she took society's hatred of those groups off of them, and heaped it onto pedophiles. "These groups aren't bad, but that group over there, beyond the horizon, THEY'RE the REAL evil people." She said it to herself so many times, as a defense of those groups, that she didn't realize she was demonizing a group she didn't understand.
