I think a lot of people still believe that equal opportunity=equal results. That is simply not the case, but they believe if that people aren't equally represented in all fields, then it must be due to discrimination. Blacks are given an equal opportunity in modern day America, and individual blacks can reach the highest levels in their respective fields. Barack Obama is the perfect example of that. However, it's unrealistic to expect that blacks as a whole will succeed at the same rate that whites and Asians succeed.
I noticed that on the night that Obama was elected, many of the commentators were still saying that we still have a long way to go despite his victory. I think that's indicative of the mentality that equal opportunity=equal results. The fact is that some people are just naturally better at certain things than other people. While most of these differences are among individuals, group averages are much more of a factor than political correctness would show.
