McCain was neck-and-neck with Obama and the electoral college impossible to assign, and right then Lehman Brothers decided to go broke and the financial crisis was launched. That, dear, was made entirely by Old White Men, who among other things control the US banks and financial system - and it was made right at the time when it would most hurt McCain and boost Obama. While I am stopping short of actually claiming a conspiracy, I can also see why it looks so from certain angles.
