He said the truth, at least the truth for some jurisdictions, without knowing it was the truth, presumably because it wasn't in the ones where he knows the book. While still not honest from his part, it's still, technically, truthful.

That said, I agree with your point of avoiding lying when it's not necessary to abandon the truth to arrive to the coast we want to take.
