The right to die is a necessary correlate to the right to life, and just as inalienable as the right to life would be. Anyone who assigns themselves the authority to decide that you are not allowed to die, or the authority to decide to extend your life, is in exactly the same ethical position of whoever assigns themselves the authority to decide that you are not allowed to live, or to decide to shorten your life. Life itself is the highest expression of the right to bodily autonomy. (myself, I would never "actively" commit suicide, but I have thought up several scenarios where I would refuse life-saving medical treatment) |
