I agree that the most we can acquire from the general public now (for the most part) is tolerance and respect for our attraction base. The right to pursue romantic interests with the youth that we love will need the benefit of the youth liberation movement bearing fruit in concert with our own movement. I think that in the future, that movement will be proud to have us as allies. Our desires go far beyond the sexual...we want to see the youth that we love become first class citizens across the globe, to have the right to vote, to choose their own method of education, to choose where they will live, and when to start a vocation. I think in the future many enlightened parents will join us in this move for freedom. Freedom and liberation has always been achieved for every group that has ever sought them out (albeit after an often long and difficult struggle that is won in steps) and I don't agree with any anti or anti-contact MAA that this is the first movement for liberation that is destined to fail. I already see the writing on the wall for its future success.
I disagree with the members of this community who think that fighting for tolerance and acceptance of our attraction base should be our ultimate goal, but rather it should only be our immediate goal. I have achieved a large degree of respect and tolerance from the people who know me in real life and I have NEVER had to pretend to be (or actually become) anti-contact in order to achieve it. I will NEVER toss aside my principles for political expediency, nor will I ever agree that youth need to be under the strict control of adults (where they are most vulnerable to genuine abuse). I believe that democracy (REAL democracy with freedom for minority groups and opinions, people, not the "mob rule" that so many of you intellectuals seem to fear) should be applicable to all of us, not simply people of a certain age group only.
As such, I support the right of the gay community to marry members of the same gender legally. I know that the gay community has been harsh and hurtful to the MAA community and not at all friendly to the youth liberation movement, and I believe that much of this is for the purposes of political expediency...in other words, they keep their minds closed on these subjects to preserve their own group's freedom from persecution. It simply isn't a good time for them to be open-minded on ALL subjects right now, so they limit their goals for freedom to where it's at least reasonably socially acceptable. But I still think that if gays can be discriminated against, there is less hope for the timely arrival of youth emancipation and MAA liberation in the future. Hence, I also disagree with the members of this community who think we should be unresponsive to the rights of the gay community to get back at them for refusing to stand up en masse for our rights. After living all these years without the right to love as I choose I think I can say that I wish for NO OTHER group of people to have to live like this, even if these people choose to keep their minds closed regarding my own freedom (and to that of the youths that I love). I respect freedom, liberty, and democracy enough to want to see such things apply to ALL people, even those who do not think that I should achieve it and who choose to hate me for not loving in precisely the same way that they do. Yes, they should know better, but I do not think their self-imposed ignorance is an excuse for me to display indifference towards their own freedom. As such, I will oppose Proposition 8 with every fiber of my being.
Thank you for reminding us about why we need to do so, Catalyst. Thank you even more for reminding me of why I am proud to be a pro-rights activist for ALL humankind.
