I'm really glad this worked out for you on many levels: That being stated, I must note that I've always thought that members of a minority group have a degree of responsibility to present themselves with all the integrity and consciousness that they are capable of.
Threatening suicide under any circumstances seems like emotional black-mail to me, if it's a sincere feeling, you might have thought about just stating the things that you did while sparing your friend the theatrics.
