Many countries differ when it comes to what is "clean and legal" vs. what is not. In the U.S., obscenity is determined by what is known as "community standards," so even text, drawings, CG, and art that is normally protected by the constitution when consulting federal legislation can get you into trouble with a charge of obscenity. Of course a Website attempting to work within the confines of the law will always tell you that its content is legal. This may be the case for most users. However, written laws don't define legality; the current standard of interpretation for said laws do. The power to keep yourself safe ultimately lies in your own hands.

The best way to avoid an obscenity charge or any other unfair accusation based on your sexual preferences is to keep your private matters private.

  • Use a proxy to navigate potentially questionable sites.
  • Make sure your browser's DNS requests are filtered over an anonymous connection.
  • Encrypt information whenever possible to prevent third parties (such as ISPs or hackers) from reading intercepted data.
  • Disable cookies and JavaScript when surfing privately to help prevent personally identifying information from leaking.

Perhaps the easiest way to accomplish all these things is with the Vidalia Bundle and Firefox. Download the NoScript and CookieCuller Add-ons to easily manage both JavaScript and cookies from inside Firefox. The Vidalia Bundle should come with the Torbutton Add-on. If not, download it yourself. Then use Firefox any time you wish to surf anonymously. Also, as you become more experienced, consider donating some bandwidth to the EFF's Tor Project to increase speed and reliability for all users of the Tor network.

You have the right to privacy. There is nothing wrong with taking advantage of the tools that are available to ensure you are doing everything you can to protect it. And if you can do so while helping to further freedom of speech and privacy for everyone, then all the better! As NFiH says, "Surf safe. ;)"
