Fluent gibberish

This guy is passing along half-understood derivations of half-baked notions. The "Fixated/Regressed" typologies aren't employed as descriptors of Pedophiles; only of Sex Offenders. ( Note that the Regressed type fails to meet the diagnostic criteria to qualify as a Pedophile according to the APA's model.) Even a brief reading of the literature shows that these SO typologies are an attempt by forensic psychiatrists to appropriate some of the concepts used by the APA ( albeit out of context ) so as to try to legitimize their profession. However, the APA has the benefit of drawing conclusions from work with a broad cross-section of the public; and of creating a pretty conservative and almost purely descriptive definition. I don't buy the notion of it as a pathology, but the definition doesn't require much reworking to become descriptive of an Orientation. Whereas the SO typologies are an after-the-fact attempt to draw conclusions from a limited population and to create a predictive description to assist in field-work. Similar work by "profilers" has drawn continued criticism for its lack of predictive value and its attempts to sound specific while remaining vague enough to be useless. In this case, the ideas which have been lifted from the APA mask a set of categories which, like racial typologies, tell us more about the priorities of those inventing the categories than serve as a description of the subjects being classified; and are therefore scientifically useless. Lanning and others salvage what little can be gleaned by discussing the Preferential and Situational Offenders. But instead of speculating about what conditions produce SOs ( speculations which the APA has found to have no merit ) they simply use them to classify patterns of exhibited behavior. Such classifications have some utility in field-work since most offenders ( sexual or otherwise ) tend to be creatures of habit. The aforementioned is why the "profiler" is no more useful than a standard case detective. The information gleaned from a crime, combined with statistics about prior persons incarcerated for the same offense has the same predictive value as some semi-mystical attempt to "get inside the mind" of the offender. But you won't gain much understanding of the Regressed/Fixated typologies from this blogger since he doesn't really comprehend what he's paraphrasing. And there are some whoppers here. He starts by substituting the word "pedophile" in a discussion of Ped and non-Ped SOs, and goes quickly downhill from there. he regresses to a pregenital sexuality, which finds its satisfaction in oral  (e.g. masturbation, fetishism) or anal impulses (e.g. sadomasochism) and its natural compatriot, the child. Wow, I didn't know that an interest in children was correlated with being kinky. I guess I'll hit on some hawt kindergarten teacher and see if she's interested in analingus. Fixated pedophiles tend to be (i.e. think of themselves as)  homosexual, and regressed (think of themselves as) heterosexual. Dang, I guess I should register at BoyChat ;p male homosexual regressed pedophiles prefer adult men but would settle for a kid. ... because there are so many kids out there throwing themselves at 45 year old queers that its easier to "settle" than it is to fight for one's preference to be a telio. "Kids don't do anything for me, but he offered to buy me an Otter-Pop, and one thing led to another." And THAT'S before the writing degenerates into sounding like the ramblings of a Cheech & Chong routine. You say, "but certainly not everyone is a pedophile, there must be something specifically different about them?" Or, if you work for the Supreme Court: "there must be some mental abnormality which is properly the domain of medicine?" Dang, how did he know that I'm on the Supreme Court. I better start shredding and deleting before I end up like Foley ;p And in the end he ends up trying to justify his misuse of terminology by fiat. He simply declares the psychiatric definition of "pedophile" null and void. Having thus had to erase the term Sex Offender from every misunderstood document he lifted, he's now prepared to substitute "pedophile" while removing its use by the profession who coined the term. * sheesh * Dante
