Vulcan was born ugly and with some deformity, and was kicked out of Olympus as a result, even though he had Jupiter and Juno as parents. He had to teach himself the arts of metals in his dwelling below Mt Etna, but was still not liked by the Olympic gods. He had to gain a place among the (eventually) 12, which he only did when he forged the weapons with which the Olympics defeated one of the many coups against them (I don't remember which one exactly). But he had to make a struggle of his own to become recognised as an equal to the rest of the 12.
