those assorted god botherers, reforming socialist wowsers and other fascists who lament existentialism and independence of thought, are actually lamenting the possibility of people learning to take responsibility for their own actions.
what they are proposing, that people do what they're told, leads to two problems. what happens when that external authority is weak (broken windows) and what happens when it's evil (nazism).
its better to submit to no authority but your own, but to try to be the best person you can be. what is best? i think the ability to imagine how other people are feeling, and to care.
i'm a mountaineer, and i like this proverb from where i live: "if i should bow down, let it be to a great mountain". that's my philosophy.
