All this makes me wonder about how we can establish and maintain a functioning and prosperous society

Where do find the time for your research into such deep topics??

I think what some malfunctioning societies lack is a sense of respect and responsibility towards other people, that usually comes from being in a community, and working together etc.
People are so isolated these days, and this drives some to be antisocial...
