In most fiction there's a tendency to assume that if someone is sexually attracted to something, the person will act on those feelings regardless of whom it harms. This, obviously, applies in most fiction to people who are attracted to children, who never seek any sort of help or attempt to avoid children, but instead are always fundamentally evil people who revel in ruining lives (although, to be fair, it might simply not come up if the person wasn't acting on it, but it could still be played for temptation).

In real life, not only are not all paedophiles child molesters, but many child molesters act purely out of a desire for power, and do not actually qualify as paedophiles. Only subversions will be listed, partially because this is so common, and partially because it would be foolish to claim that paedophiles are never child molesters.

Note that the same works will regularly confuse paedophilia (attraction to the sexually undeveloped) with ephebophilia (attraction to young, but post-pubescent individuals). Note also that in many works, especially older ones, homosexuality in general will often be confused with paedophiliaand even now, paedophiles are assumed to be homosexual. Paedophilia has also been shown in fiction to have no cure (except for death which is why no one really cares if one gets killed).
