having said all that, i realise that in some countries (amerika?) the profession has allowed the state to dictate it's terms, and that it literally isn't possible to safely talk to a therapist about paedophilic feelings. this is clearly insane. it is an an abuse of human rights and demands political attention.

The only real stipulation I know of that the U.S. government has with regard to mandatory reporting is if you either admit to a crime or you admit you may hurt a specific person or yourself. Beyond that the doctor-client privilege is in effect, and I think most counselors are probably more trustworthy than some here would give them credit for.
