"And the more I think about it, Old Billy was right. Let's kill all the lawyers, kill 'em tonight." - Old Eagles song (yes, btw, the same Eagles who sing the U.S. Post office jingle) referring here, I believe, to Shakespeare's Henry VI.

The only cure for these energy-sucking vampires to stop feeding them. I have never quite understood why we have to employ people simply to make additional, ever more convoluted laws. Then we have to employ people who interpret them for the layperson. Then, still more folks to decide whether or not some poor sap COMPLIED with them. It seems to me an awful waste of resources when a simpler, test of guilt or complicity should always be determined and any punishment meted according to actual harm done, and never for what MIGHT have happened. Was this not the original meaning of "an eye for an eye?" What a different world this would be, were, say, ten percent of the money spent on this frivolity redirected to honest, psychologically sound social programs, aimed at prevention. The biggest problem we face is allowing our leadership to foster an us/them "different is evil" mentality. We should instead strive as a people to recognize and celebrate our similarities, rather than this useless jostling and bickering about our differences. Thinking like this is dangerous (to some, anyway,) as it could very well hearken the end of that most-favored human institution, Fear-based control.
