Not a Shakespeare quote per se

One often sees the "First lets kill all the lawyers" quote attributed to Shakespeare. And its true he did pen it. But he put the line in the mouth of a villainous imbecile. Its designed to show a thug's idea of how to place a tyrant in power. And as such it praises lawyers as a check on the rule of bullies.

In my opinion its not lawyers who are to blame; its legislators who wish to "facilitate" law enforcement and the public who says "there ought to be a law" anytime anything bad happens. The Utopian fallacy lies in the belief that we should accept a degree of restriction where it will guarantee that nobody suffer when that goal is not an achievable option.

Phrases like "no child left behind" are promises which are undeliverable. And an absolutely high price may be paid, but it will never deliver an absolute goal.
