Excellent post, thanks!!!

I have always believed in a mostly genetic root, while not necessarily discarding non-genetic biological, or social/cultural causes (in particular, cultural acceptance of early and / or intergenerational relationships) intervening too.

I disagree that an exclusive attraction (presumably caused by an over-concentration of paedo genes and other factors in a single individual) would always be an error: it is possible that a girl (or a boy for that matter) is fertile before they show visual signs of post-pubescence.

But in general, I think it's obvious that there are some "first come, first served" features to the sexual market - which would make at least some prepubescent and thus pre-fertile attraction desirable: the paed male would woo the girl before the non-paed male, and be all that likelier to become the father of her first child.

As for the debate regarding "wife vs fling", we are applying a posteriori cultural concepts there that likely wouldn't apply. If the population is increasing or seeking to increase and the males are going for younger partners, simple math dictates that there are more than one females per male. Since leaving females unmated is inefficient, it follows that either polygyny or promiscuity, or a mix of both, are practiced.
