This subject comes up here every so often. Some will probably post a link to a previous thread about it. Personally, I think the whole idea is bogus.

I had a 'lucid' dream once. I controlled my dream. Then I woke up and excitedly told my brother all about it, arguing that lucid dreams are real, he has to believe me because I had one. Then I woke up and remembered my brother was dead. People who assemble model airplanes and think about assembling model airplanes all day long have dreams about assembling model airplanes, big surprise. People who think about controlling their dreams all day long, like all the books on it advise people to do, will have dreams about controlling their dreams, big surprise. But just because they're dreaming about controlling their dream doesn't mean they're controlling their dream, any more than dreaming about flying means you're flying. I suppose one could argue that dreaming that you're controlling your dream is as good as actually doing it, if you experience what you want to experience. One could also argue that dreaming you're flying is as good as flying, and saves gas besides.
