Selwyn Goodacre writes: It is worth noting that Falconer Madan, grandfather of Venetia Phair (obituary, May 30) was finalising his definitive bibliography of Lewis Carroll (Handbook of the Literature of C. L. Dodgson, 1931) at the time of the discovery of the new planet Pluto in 1930.
He would have been more aware of the importance of girls (like Alice) to the world. Perhaps this added impetus for him to pay closer attention to his ten-year-old granddaughters suggestion for a name for the new planet, prompting him to take immediate action by contacting the Professor of Astronomy with her idea.
