I do not know the answer to that, but it is always best to use it when concerned about leaving tracks in the computer.

Safari also has a private mode browsing, and so does the latest Firefox3.5, to see it in Firefox you need to go to Tools>Start Private browsing.

Nothing beats full disk encryption... Consider Truecrypt, which is free.
