The problem is that while there may be enough food for all right now (assuming distribution and waste issues can be solved), populations keep increasing, while we don't know how long we can maintain these levels of food production. Soils do run out of nutrients when used too heavily, and modern high-production agriculture depends greatly on fertilizer and other chemicals derived from petroleum. Even in areas where soil has not been exhausted, a lot of it simply blows away due to poor erosion management. Many fisheries have collapsed, and many others are on the brink of collapse. And while birthrates are declining, the increase in standard of living means that each person would require more resources. There is a limit to the number of people the earth can support, and so far we aren't doing ourselves many favors in trying to keep this limit high.
