Keep in mind that there are many competing schools of Islam, many areas where Islam has been mixed with local traditions and religions, and many areas which are theoretically Islamic but the people ignore anything they don't like. In fact, Islam is a lot like Christianity in all of these regards.

I take Trucker's point that most soldiers are serving for honorable reasons or are just doing a job. In fact, there are a number of ex-soldiers at this board, so this is well-acknowledged here. Every war and every army has been responsible for atrocities, but that does not mean that the average soldier goes to war with atrocities in mind.

Still, we should remember that what is true for American soldiers is also true for most of the soldiers fighting against Americans, and that is perhaps the biggest reason to do everything we can to resolve our differences peacefully. The average citizen of an Islamic nation may be benighted in different ways than the average American citizen, but there is no great difference in degree. As has been noted, Islamic societies have, at least, not bought into anti-ped panic.
