The gay rights movement became accepted by the far left, then the mainstream left, and the mainstream left has a lot of pull with Hollywood, the news media, etc. plus there are plenty of gay celebrities who people like. Gays are "loud and proud" and even if people are homophobic or have some anti-gay views, it's becoming more and more like racism or antisemitism. So since it's becoming less and less popular to denounce gays, and doing so can even be considered a "hate crime" these days, and that the gay community often denounces MAA's to separate themselves from us, we become the scapegoats. We're just about the only group left that you're still free to take open shots at. Muslims too to a certain extent, although that's probably dying off a bit as 9/11 continues to fade away in our collective conscience.
