Gays were oppressed up until the pivotal point which was Stonewall, the radical uprising. They weren't embraced by any progressive culture, they had to embrace it themselves. They became the counter-culture of the 70's.

You missed my point (even though you essentially restated it elsewhere): the radical gay movement was part of a larger radical/progressive social trend and it could not have occurred as it did and made the progress it did without that essential backdrop. As far as them not being embraced by the other progressives . . . bullshit. I've read enough hippie publications to know that many hippies were fighting on behalf of gays concurrently with the gay movement. In fact, hippie publications like Oz and many individual hippies fought for gay rights well before Stonewall.
