I think it is more about an aggressive society rather than men. Women peers, mothers and wives had a lot to do with social norms that were aggressively enforced by men throughout history. Men often took advice from their wives (and were influenced by their relationships with their daughters) about how they should act domestically and politically on issues outside their own family. But often that advice was a mere proxy of the wife's father.

Remember, husbands pretty much had to purchase their wife from their wife's father to show the world how much he loved her. The currency of purchase is not always money, but instead sometimes ideas, values, social roles and opinions.
