Ever since I was a teenager I never had any problem seeing the Bible as a series of allegories rather than literal truths; I mean, Christ himself spoke in allegories (parables) did he not? So why wouldn't God the Father? The problem was that no one else in my circle saw it that way; it was the literal Word of God, dammit, and you'd better believe it is so! The other problem is, once you begin to understand that holy texts are not meant to be taken literally, it all breaks down because you have nothing solid to anchor to.

My spiritual life almost literally modeled the historical timeline: as a child I was force-fed a literal view of the Bible and bought it for awhile. As a teen I had a kind of religious Renaissance where the Bible was a series of parables, and my view of God was more Deistic. I also started to develop a strong interest in Transcendental thought, which lasted quite a while. Eventually I renounced Christianity altogether and developed a very New Agey sort of faith. Then I went through a severe crisis which finally led me to that most postmodern of spiritual perspectives: agnosticism.
