You sound like a Vietnam veteran. "We could have won, man! the politicians stopped us!" It's probably even true, if we had been willing to commit genocide.

Wars do tend to eventually moderate views, as the hardliners on both sides are killed, increasingly moderate leaders eventually take over, and attrition lessens the population pressure that usually starts wars.

It's funny how the heavily armed, well equipped people with overwhelming numbers always call their opponents cowards.
But yes, that is how insurgencies in the United States have operated, too.
