I am certain the film was in no way meant as a representation of child love in the sense that we mean it. That's your projection. The most you can really say here is that Trent's poverty, if anything, is meant as a metaphor for any condition in which people are persecuted for their status in society rather than who they really are, such as with X-Men. And really, that broad application is what makes the film so brilliant. A lot of people can relate to Trent's situation for an assortment of reasons, again, very much like with X-Men.
