Thanks to Enochian at BoyChat for bringing this to our attention.

Thanks to Debbie Nathan for once again doing investigative journalism where no one else will.

Apparently Shirley Mason, known by the Pseudonym "Sybil" in a best-selling book in the 1970s, faked having multiple personalities because that was the only way to get psychiatrist Connie Wilbur to pay attention to her. Mason tried to recant later but with not only psychiatric help but also rent, food, and clothing paid for by Wilbur, Mason soon learned the advantages of shutting up.

This is important to us because 'Sybil' spawned a host of copycat cases, and usually these revolved around purported child abuse. They were part of a larger phenomenon of individuals seeking sympathy by faking claims of extreme childhood abuse, thus causing exaggerated fears of the real problem of child abuse while simultaneously distracting attention from those real cases.
