"Do you exist? The YOU in you, I mean."

I'm a materialist too.

The notion of the soul seems to be tied up in the idea of the Self. And yet we know that the Self resides in left half of the brain, and that there are other portions of the brain carrying out activities and making choices which are rationalized by the Self. Split-brain experiments show the degree to which rationalization can occur when choices made by other "agents" within the mind are brought to the attention of the one we think of as "ourself."

The notion of a unitary soul identical with the Self is an old notion. But it emerges out of ideas of a multiple souled person which more accurately describes the process going on within. With so much focus on "proving" the existence of a soul; weighing, testing &tc, you'd think that a medium might try to contact the "right brain" as well.

Who is to say that once the meat which facilitates communication is decayed, that the multiple souls ought to be connected in any form of communication.

( Though this might fit better with some ideas of Ghosts. That the rational left brain leaves the world and the emotional right brain remains. )
