No one has ever become an Emperor of Japan without being born a member of the Imperial family on father´s side. One man (a lover of the then Empress, BTW) tried in 8th century, and was rebuffed by a very clear oracular pronouncement.

Japan HAS had a bunch of Empresses - but never has any Empress been married during reign, nor after abdication.
