It's already being replaced. The proof is in the fervent environment now in Austrian and Objectivist circles about whether to even keep the word or make a new one; not unlike the debate here on whether to keep the P word or adopt another. Yes, some do believe the word is irredeemably lost.
Changing the word without significantly changing the rules of the system itself leaves you with a "change" that is nothing more than purely semantic.
Try another. All dogs are reproducible with wolves and their offspring would be usually tame; even a genetic wolf can be tamed a lot by being raised by dogs (as long as the dogs are themselves tame, of course).
Yet it's against the law to own a wolf without a special license in the U.S., because they are considered effectively undomesticatable.
