I am very happy my post sparked a tangent.

I'd like to mention that a lot of the emotional "complexities" and "complications" are probably caused by sexual repression. That if we lived in a society that was open about sex and accepting, then a lot of those complexities would vanish. This includes jealousy. In my opinion, marriage is outdated. Sex shouldn't be exclusive. Couples are good for raising children, not restricting sex. Monogamy is fine as an agreed upon choice but it shouldn't be so strongly encouraged.
