This is not American, Markaba. Not even Western, or Christian. This is pretty much universal. Few cultures have ever been strongly against adults administering corporal punishment to children. Most would condemn deadly abuse, of course, but would tolerate a lot of non-deadly abuse anyway.

I understand that and have never said otherwise, but I wasn't talking about those other cultures. I hold my own society to a higher standard because I am part of it. I will still condemn evil and violence against kids wherever it's practiced, but I reserve a special right to gripe about Americans. Just because it has been a universal trait around the world doesn't mean we can't largely overcome it as a society. That's what the one-two punch of laws and mores are for.
