Saying "consenting adults" is already known code for "gays too". It therefore also attracts the same attack.
It is arbitrary where you draw the line; at any point someone will still attack you for it. The decision to draw in the face of attack remains yours. By deciding so, you decide whose and which attacks you are not approving and whose you are.
