Alcohol can have a very strong effect on one's emotional state, causing them to "act out" in ways they would be much less likely to do when sober, unless angered in the extreme or pushed to the limit.
Then probably they are using alcohol as a pretext; same as sport hooligans use their team's results as pretext.
