To me it is a kind of political correctness to suggest that all information has equal merit. It doesn't.

It doesn't - but censorship is an implicit endorsement of the idea that someone in the department involved knows how much merit every idea has and can thus censor one or another in an always adequate and fair fashion. Even if not all information has equal merit, to suppose the existence of such a person is still absurd.

social networking sites are a private entity and have the right to make rules.

Of course they do. What they do not have the right is to act as if they were not hypocrites in the rules they make.

And also, they're free. It's a bit hard for me to sympathize with people who want to gripe about the rules of a site they pay nothing to use.

Of course they're paying to use it. It's just not in nominal dollars. They are paying in all the surrendering of activities, information and media, and in all the advertising they are subject to. That it is an acceptable price to most people because of not being accompanied by a nominal dollar price doesn't mean that the price is zero. (And that's without even taking into account that internet connections themselves have a cost)
