Carol Hamm was raped and murdered in 1984 and David Vasquez was arrested, tried, convicted, and sentenced to 35 years for the rape and murder in 1985. Timothy Wilson Spenser was tried and convicted of the rapes and murders of several other women in January, 1987. Spencer became the first murderer to be convicted on the basis of DNA evidence in his state and David Vasquez the first to be exonerated following conviction on the basis of contradictory DNA evidence. On January 4, 1989, David was granted a full and unconditional pardon by the government. The government had refused David a new trial. Rather, they simply issued a governor’s pardon (“Oh, we forgive you for doing this crime.”). Please note that the difference between the dates of David’s pardon and Spencer’s conviction is two full years. This is how long the government knew David was innocent yet in prison.

David was a friend of mine.
